Adyen Extends Toast Payments Partnership Into the US

Vertical software platforms rarely hand their home market to an outside processor. Toast has just done exactly that, five years into a partnership that until now stayed offshore.

Adyen announced on 10 August 2026 that it is expanding its partnership with restaurant platform Toast into the United States. The two have worked together since 2021 across Ireland, the UK, Canada and Australia; the US becomes the fifth market.

Toast facilitated more than $215 billion in gross payment volume across approximately 180,000 locations worldwide in the twelve months to 30 June 2026.

What is actually changing

Adyen will provide payment services inside Toast's US ecosystem, which spans point-of-sale, online ordering, payments and back-of-house operations. Adyen describes what it supplies as end-to-end payment capabilities, data-driven insights and financial products in a single global solution, with issuing, capital and business accounts integrated into one system.

One point worth keeping straight: the $215 billion figure is Toast's platform-wide volume, not the volume Adyen processes. Neither company has disclosed how much US volume moves to Adyen, or over what period.

Why a platform gives up its home market

"Speed, control, and reliability matter, especially in service-based businesses like restaurants, retail, or hospitality. When a guest is waiting, every second counts."
— Blake Breathitt, SVP Global Co-Head of Strategy, Adyen

For a restaurant platform, payment failure is not an abandoned cart — it is a queue at the till. That raises the value of processing reliability relative to processing price, which is the argument a provider like Adyen can make against building in-house.

Michel Rbeiz, General Manager, Fintech at Toast, framed the expansion as continuity rather than change, describing Adyen as a cornerstone of how Toast delivers payments across international markets.

The pattern this fits

Vertical SaaS platforms have spent a decade absorbing payments to capture the margin. What this signals is the second-order move: keeping the merchant relationship and the economics, while outsourcing the processing layer to whoever runs it most reliably at scale.

The open question is which layer holds the value long-term — the platform that owns the operator relationship, or the processor that owns the rails underneath it.

Data highlight

215 billion USD

Gross payment volume facilitated by the Toast platform

12 months to 30 June 2026

As stated by Adyen in its announcement of 10 August 2026: Toast facilitated more than $215 billion in gross payment volume across approximately 180,000 locations worldwide in the last 12 months ending 30 June 2026. This is Toast's platform-wide figure across all processors and markets; it is not the volume processed by Adyen, and neither company has disclosed the share of US volume moving to Adyen.

Term definition

Gross payment volume (GPV)
The total value of payments processed through a platform over a stated period, counted before fees, refunds and chargebacks. Because platforms differ in whether they include all processors, all markets and all payment methods, GPV figures from different companies are rarely directly comparable.
